The Heroes of Might and Magic series is the most entertaining of all PC RPGs, and the
third game, released in 1999 by the 3DO Company, is the best in the series.
2. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings
There are many RTS games with historical gameplay, but Age of Empires II,
developed by Ensemble Studios in 1999, was the best.
3. Quake II
Brought to PC in 1997 by id Software, this classic FPS has an amazing movie-like
opening, a really interesting design and some jamming industrial music on the
soundtrack. Quake II still packs a punch!
4. Duke Nukem 3D
3D Realms' cultish FPS from 1996 had some mind-blowing graphics and gameplay
for its time, like being able to shoot bottles on the wall and billiard balls on the
pool tables. Also the first FPS to take place in the real world, sort of.
5. Carmageddon II : Carpocalypse Now
With Iron Maiden on the soundtrack, cool cars and levels and lots of zombies to run
over, this controversial 1998 car game from Stainless Games provided me with many
happy hours during my teens.
6. Grim Fandango
LucasArts' legendary Grim Fandango, from 1998, was the first game that I can
remember with a fantastic story. More like a graphic novel than a video game, with
awesome visuals and challenging, fun gameplay.
7. Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Released in 2001 by Activision, Wolfenstein is one of the best WWII FPS games despite
being full of rather annoying monsters. Works best, in fact brilliantly, during the parts
when it's just a war game.
8. Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000
It may look a little lame today, but it was really original and entertaining upon its
release in 1999. Rebellion and Fox Interactive gives you the opportunity to play as
either colonial marine, alien or predator. Dark, challenging and hugely entertaining!
9. Half Life
Valve Corporation got me hooked immediately thanks to the intro, where you
arrive at your top secret job somewhere in the desert and walk around laboratories
before all hell breaks loose! Although I haven't played any of the other games in the
series, which includes the Portal games, to me Half Life doesn't seem to have aged a
day since its release in 1998.
10. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Created by Iguana Entertainment and Acclaim in 1997, Turok lets you battle
dinosaurs, huge gorillas and tribesmen in a fantastic jungle/spaceship world. What's
not to love?
